As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.

John I, 31 — ‘ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων’ - ‘en hydati baptizon’ - ‘in water (I) baptised; with water (I) baptised’. Both translations are possible. The first indicates that water was the medium in which washing was a sign of repentance and expectation of the Messiah-Christ; the second indicates that this washing was performed with water, which emphasises the importance of water.
John I, 32 — ‘ἐξ οὐρανοῦ’ - ‘ex ouranou’ - ‘from heaven’. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates where the Spirit descended from like a dove.
John I, 33 — ‘βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι’ - ‘baptizein en hydati’ - ‘baptise in water; baptise with water’. Both translations are possible, see above. ‘ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ’ - ‘ho baptizon en pneumati hagio’ - ’One baptising in the Holy Spirit; One baptising with the Holy Spirit‘.
