Glory be to Jesus Christ! 🌞

Dedicated to Emma Kok.

(1 Corinthians XV, 12-19)

1 Corinthians 15:14 – ‘ημον’ – ‘emon’ - ‘our’.

On the basis of the truth and reality of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Paul confirms the truth of the doctrine of the general resurrection of the dead. This is a rare example of logical syllogisms in Scripture. It must be said that many of the Corinthians were educated, knew philosophy and logic, so Paul is reasoning like a philosopher or logician here. In particular, he uses the logical law If from A follows B, then from not B follows not A and the law of double negation: not (not C) is equal to C. Here, A is the dead do not rise, B is Christ is not risen, and C refers to two different statements at the same time – Christ is risen and the dead rise. In other words, Paul is proving a theological theorem, which means that there is such a thing as the resurrection of the dead, exemplified and confirmed by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, it must be understood that only its existence (if a person believes in the resurrection of Jesus Christ) is logically proven, but not its universality or necessity. We discover the universality of the resurrection of all the dead and its necessity by faith, by the Revelation of God, not by logic.

Paul then goes on to use the same laws of logic for another issue - the salvation of people and the forgiveness of sins (a similar reasoning, with the difference that Paul starts from denying the resurrection of Christ and then shows that this reasoning is false because Christ has risen).

Verse 19 shows that belief in the resurrection of the dead and eternal life is an essential and inseparable part of faith in Christ, i.e. Christianity.
