it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.

(Philippians III, 1-8; 8-19)
Philippians III:1 — ‘ἐν κυρίῳ’ - ‘en kyrio’ - ‘in the Lord; by the Lord’. Both translations are possible, the first emphasising that joy is a gift of God's grace, and the second expressing the desire to rejoice in the Lord Himself.

Philippians III, 3, 4, 14 — ‘ἐν Χριστῷ’ - ‘en CHristo’ - ‘in Christ; by Christ’. Similarly to the previous translation, both are possible. ‘ἐν σαρκὶ’ - ‘en sarki’ - ‘in the body; by the body’. The first translation is more likely, i.e. it refers to hope in the body, in something closely related to the physical.

Philippians III, 5 — ‘ἐκ γένους Ἰσραήλ’ - ‘ek genous Israel’ - ‘of the lineage of Israel’. ‘ἐξ Ἑβραίων’ - ‘ex Hebraion’ - ‘of the Jews’. Here the preposition ‘ek’ indicates origin.

Philippians III, 6 — ‘ἐν νόμῳ’ - ‘en nomo’ - ‘in the Law’.

Philippians III:9 — ‘ἐν αὐτῷ’ - ‘en auto’ - ‘in Him’. ‘ἐκ νόμου’ - ‘ek nomou’ - ‘from the Law’. ‘ἐκ θεοῦ’ - ‘ek theou’ - ‘from God’. The preposition ‘ek’ here indicates origin.

Philippians III, 11 — ‘εἰς τὴν ἐξανάστασιν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν’ - ‘eis ten exanastasin ten ek nekron’ - ‘into the resurrection from the dead’. That is, it refers to the attainment of the resurrection. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates whence the exodus and transition — from death to life — takes place.

Philippians III, 12 — ‘ὑπὸ Χριστοῦ’ - ‘hypo CHristou’ - ‘through Christ’. Here the preposition ‘hypo’ is with the genitive case, and this is the meaning of the translation.

Philippians III, 14 — ‘εἰς τὸ βραβεῖον’ - ‘eis to brabeion’ - ‘for the reward; into the reward’. Both translations are possible, although the first is clearer and simpler.

Philippians III, 16 — ‘εἰς ὃ’ - ‘eis ho’ - ‘into what; into that which’. The preposition ‘eis’ here indicates approaching and reaching.

Philippians III, 19 — ‘ἐν τῇ αἰσχύνῃ’ - ‘en te aiskhyne’ - ‘in shame’.

(Luke XIII, 1-9; 31-35)
Luke XIII, 1 — ‘ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ’ - ‘en auto to kairo’ - ‘at the same time’. A common expression.

Luke XIII, 2, 4 — ‘παρὰ πάντας’ - ‘para pantas’ - ‘to proximity with all’. The preposition ‘para’ here with the accusative means something not quite clear, including comparison, juxtaposition, and at the same time inclusion in the group of all Galileans or all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. On the one hand, it conveys well the doubts of the questioners in the question and the possible ways of reasoning, which are still problematic, as is well written about in the links below, in particular on Facebook.

Luke XIII, 4 — ‘ἐν τῷ Σιλωὰμ’ - ‘en to Siloam’ - ‘in Siloam’. ‘ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ’ - ‘en Ierousalem’ - ‘in Jerusalem’.

Luke XIII, 6 — ‘ἐν τῷ ἀμπελῶνι’ - ‘en to ampeloni’ - ‘in the vineyard’. ‘ἐν αὐτῇ’ - ‘en aute’ - ‘on it’.

Luke XIII, 7 — ‘ἀφ’ οὗ' - aph ou - since. The preposition ‘apo’ in its form before the following ‘ou’ indicates the counting of time from the moment of which the master speaks. ‘ἐν τῇ συκῇ’ - ‘en te syke’ - ‘on this fig tree’.

Luke XIII, 9 — ‘εἰς τὸ μέλλον’ - ‘eis to mellon’ - ‘in the time to come’. It points to the future.

Luke XIII, 31 — ‘Ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ’ - ‘En aute te ora’ - ‘At that time’. A common expression.

Luke XIII, 34 — ‘ὑπὸ τὰς πτέρυγας’ - ‘hypo tas pterygas’ - ‘under the wings’. The preposition ‘hypo’ is with the accusative and means that the Lord wants to gather Israel 'under His wings' (fixed at 13/04/2025).

Luke XIII, 35 — ‘ἐν ὀνόματι’ - ‘en onomati’ - ‘in the name of’.
