Verse 31 shows that understanding is a collective process to a large extent. Philip explains the meaning of Isaiah's words to the nobleman. Without Philip, Isaiah, and the Holy Spirit, the nobleman would not have understood on his own what he had to do to achieve the salvation he sought. At the same time, his active participation was needed — action, searching, talking, hospitality, humility, reasoning, believing, etc.

John VI, 40, 44 — ‘ἡμέρᾳ’ - ‘emera’ - ‘day’.
John VI, 41 — ‘εἰμι’ - ‘eimi’ - (I) ‘am’. It is used for emphasis.
John VI, 42 — ‘ἡμεῖς’ - ‘emeis’ - ‘we’.
