it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.
Of the Saturday before Epiphany:
1 Timothy III, 15 — ‘ἐν οἴκῳ θεοῦ’ - ‘en oiko theou’ - ‘in the house of God’.
1 Timothy III, 16 — ‘ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί’ - ‘ephanerothe en sarki’ - ‘manifested in a body'. This refers to the Incarnation. ‘ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι’ - ‘edikaiothe en pneumati’ - ‘was justified in the Spirit’. This means a description from the point of view of an observer, a witness to the earthly life of the Saviour, people understand Christ in the Holy Spirit, His righteousness is not just the fulfilment of the letter of the Law, but spiritual, etc. ‘ἐν ἔθνεσιν’ - ‘en ethnesin’ - ‘in the nations; in the Gentiles’. Both translations are possible. ‘ἐν κόσμῳ’ - ‘en kosmo’ - ‘in the world; by the world’. The former is more likely, since at the time of the epistle Christians were still in the minority. ‘ἐν δόξῃ’ - ‘en doxe’ - ‘in glory’.
1 Timothy IV, 1 — ‘ἐν ὑστέροις καιροῖς’ - ‘en hysterois kairois’ - ‘in later times; in the last times’. Both translations are possible.
1 Timothy IV, 2 — ‘ἐν ὑποκρίσει’ - ‘en hypokrisei’ - ‘in hypocrisy’.
1 Timothy IV, 3 — ‘εἰς μετάλημψιν μετὰ εὐχαριστίας’ - ‘eis metalempsin meta eucharistias’ - ‘to participate with thanksgiving; to partake (in the earlier sense of the word - to join in
) with thanksgiving’. Both translations are possible, and the words are clearly inspired by the Sacrament of the Eucharist. It does not refer to communion with Christ through ordinary food, but to sharing with each other at a common table, eating together with thanksgiving, which also serves to create community, a unity.
