it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.

(Philippians II, 12-16)
Philippians II, 12 — ‘ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ’ - ‘en te parousia’ - ‘in the presence of’. The word has many meanings, but here, due to the direct comparison and opposition, this is the only translation option. ‘ἐν τῇ ἀπουσίᾳ’ - ‘en te apousia’ - ‘in the absence’.

Philippians II, 13 — ‘ἐν ὑμῖν’ - ‘en ymin’ - ‘’in you‘’.

Philippians II, 15 — ‘ἐν οἷς’ - ‘en ois’ - ‘in whom’. ‘ἐν κόσμῳ’ - ‘en kosmo’ - ‘in the world’.

Philippians II, 16 — ‘εἰς καύχημα’ - ‘eis kaukhema’ - ‘for praise’. The preposition ‘eis’ here indicates the purpose of the action. ‘εἰς ἡμέραν’ - ‘eis hemeran’ - ‘on the day’. ‘εἰς κενὸν’ - ‘eis kenon’ - ‘in vain’. A common expression.

(Luke XII, 13-15, 22-31)
Luke XII, 13 — ‘ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου’ - ‘ek tou okhlou’ - ‘from the crowd’. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates where the man was speaking from.

Luke XII, 15 — ‘ἀπὸ πάσης πλεονεξίας’ - ‘apo pases pleonexias’ - ‘from all covetousness’. The preposition ‘apo’ emphasises that one should avoid it in every way possible. ‘ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν’ - ‘en to perisseuein’ - ‘in abundance’. ‘ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων’ - ‘ek ton hyparkhonton’ - ‘from all that he has’. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates origin.

Luke XII, 25 — ‘ἐξ ὑμῶν’ - ‘ex ymon’ - ‘from you’. The preposition ‘ek’ in its form before the next vowel indicates a choice among a group.

Luke XII, 27 — ‘ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ’ - ‘en pase te doxe’ - ‘in all the glory’.

Luke XII, 28 — ‘ἐν ἀγρῷ’ - ‘en argo’ - ‘in the field’. ‘εἰς κλίβανον’ - ‘eis klibanon’ - ‘into the oven’.
