it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.
1 Thessalonians IV, 1 — ‘ἐν κυρίῳ’ - ‘en kyrio’ - ‘in the Lord; with the Lord’. Both translations are possible. ‘παρ’ ἡμῶν' - par hymon
- from beside us
. The preposition ‘para’ in its form before the following vowel is here with the genitive case, a similar construction is used also for the Holy Spirit's proceeding from the Father and the human nature of Jesus Christ. It indicates here that the Holy Spirit works through the apostles.
1 Thessalonians IV, 3 — ‘ἀπὸ τῆς πορνείας’ - ‘apo tes porneias’ - ‘from fornication’. The preposition ‘apo’ here indicates that one should completely, totally avoid fornication.
1 Thessalonians IV, 4, 7 — ‘ἐν ἁγιασμῷ καὶ τιμῇ’ - ‘en agiasmo kai time’ - ‘in holiness and purity’.
1 Thessalonians IV, 5 — ‘ἐν πάθει ἐπιθυμίας’ - ‘en pathei epithymias’ - ‘in the passion of lust’. The phrase indicates that passion and lust are closely interrelated.
1 Thessalonians IV, 6 — ‘ἐν τῷ πράγματι’ - ‘en to pragmati’ - ‘in the matter; with the matter’. Both translations are possible, the first indicating that the offence may be in the matter, and the second that the matter itself may be an offence.
1 Thessalonians IV, 8 — ‘εἰς ὑμᾶς’ - ‘eis hymas’ - ‘into us; to us’. Both translations are possible; the first indicates that the manifestation of the Holy Spirit was among the faithful, and the second indicates that the Holy Spirit was given to the faithful themselves.
1 Thessalonians IV, 9 — ‘εἰς τὸ ἀγαπᾶν ἀλλήλους’ - ‘eis to agapan allelous’ - ‘to love one another’. The preposition ‘eis’ indicates the purpose of the action.
1 Thessalonians IV, 10 — ‘εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ’ - ‘eis pantas tous adelphous en hole te Makedonia’ - ‘for all the brothers in all Macedonia’.

Luke XXI, 6 — ‘ἐν αἷς’ - ‘en hais’ - ‘in which’. That is, ‘when’.
Luke XXI, 11 — ‘ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ' - ap ouranou
- from heaven
. The preposition ‘apo’ in its form before the next vowel indicates that the signs will actually be ‘leaving heaven’, which indicates that they are not true.
Luke XXI, 20 — ‘ὑπὸ στρατοπέδων’ - ‘hypo stratopedon’ - ‘under the encampment; through the encampment’. The preposition ‘hypo’ here is with the genitive case, meaning that the troubles will come through the encampment.
Luke XXI, 21 — ‘εἰς τὰ ὄρη’ - ‘eis ta ore’ - ‘into the mountains’. ‘ἐν μέσῳ’ - ‘en meso’ - ‘ in the midst’. A common expression. ‘ἐν ταῖς χώραις’ - ‘en tais khorais’ - ‘in the countries’. ‘εἰς αὐτήν’ - ‘eis auten’ - ‘with him’.
Luke XXI, 23 — ‘ἐν γαστρὶ’ - ‘en gastri’ - ‘in the belly; in the womb’. That is, they are pregnant. ‘ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις’ - ‘en ekeinais tais hemerais’ - ‘in those days’.
Luke XXI, 24 — ‘εἰς τὰ ἔθνη πάντα’ - ‘eis ta ethne panta’ - ’into all nations’. ‘ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν’ - ‘estai patoumene hypo ethon’ - ‘will be trampled by the Gentiles, by the nations’. The preposition ‘hypo’ here indicates the passive voice of the participle.
Luke XXI, 30 — ‘ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε' - aph heauton ginoskete
- from yourselves you know; you know for yourselves
. The preposition ‘apo’ in its form before the next vowel here indicates a certain greater objectivity.
