it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.
Happy Day of Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra of Lycia, Wonderworker!
To Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra of Lycia, wonderworker:
Hebrews XIII, 18 — ‘ἐν πᾶσιν’ - ‘en pasin’ - ‘in everything’.
Hebrews XIII, 20 — ‘ἐκ νεκρῶν’ - ‘ek nekron’ - ‘from the dead’. The preposition ‘ek’ here indicates where Jesus' transition took place - from the dead to the living. ‘ἐν αἵματι διαθήκης’ - ‘en haimati diathekes’ - ‘in the blood of the covenant; with the blood of the covenant’. The second translation is more likely, since it tells why Christ is called the Shepherd of the sheep.
Hebrews XIII, 21 — ‘ἐν παντὶ ἀγαθῷ’ - ‘en panti agatho’ - ‘in every good thing; with every good thing’. Both translations are possible. ‘εἰς τὸ ποιῆσαι’ - ‘eis to poiesai’ - ‘to create; to do’. ‘ἐν ἡμῖν’ - ‘en hemin’ - ’in us‘. ‘εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων’ - ‘eis tous aionas ton aionon’ - ‘for ever and ever; forever’. A common expression.
