it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.

(Philippians IV, 10-23)
Philippians IV, 10 — ‘ἐν κυρίῳ’ - ‘en kyrio’ - ‘in the Lord; by the Lord’. The first translation is more likely, since the second is not entirely clear in meaning.

Philippians IV, 11 — ‘ἐν οἷς’ - ‘en ois’ - ‘in that which; by that which’. Both translations are possible, with the first emphasising acceptance of the situation and working for the Lord and people in different circumstances, and the second emphasising joy for the good in different, even difficult, circumstances.

Philippians IV, 12 — ‘ἐν παντὶ καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν’ - ‘en panti kai en pasin’ - ‘everywhere and in everything’.

Philippians IV, 13 — ‘ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί’ - ‘en to endynamounti’ - ‘in Him Who strengthens’.

Philippians IV, 15, 17 — ‘ἐν ἀρχῇ’ - ‘en arkhe’ - ‘in the beginning’. A common expression. ‘ἀπὸ Μακεδονίας’ - ‘apo Makedinias’ - ‘from Macedonia’. ‘εἰς λόγον’ - ‘eis logon’ - ‘in the matter; concerning the’.

Philippians IV, 16 — ‘ἐν Θεσσαλονίκῃ’ - ‘en Thessalonike’ - ‘in Thessalonica’. ‘εἰς τὴν χρείαν’ - ‘eis ten khreian’ - ‘in needs; for needs’. Both translations are possible here.

Philippians IV, 18 — ‘παρὰ Ἐπαφροδίτου’ - ‘para Epaphroditou’ - ‘from beside Epaphroditus’. ‘παρ’ ὑμῶν' - par ymon - from beside you. The preposition ‘para’ here is with the genitive case, indicating the value of the gifts and that they were from the Holy Spirit.

Philippians IV, 19 — ‘ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ’ - ‘en doxe en CHristo’ - ‘in glory in Christ’.

Philippians IV, 20 — ‘εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας’ - ‘eis tous aionas’ - ‘in the ages; forever’. A common expression.

Philippians IV, 21 — ‘ἐν Χριστῷ’ - ‘en CHristo’ - ‘in Christ’.

Philippians IV, 22 — ‘ἐκ τῆς Καίσαρος οἰκίας’ - ‘ek tes Kaisaros oikias’ - ‘from the house of Caesar’. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates where the people were from.

(Luke XIV, 12-15)
Luke XIV, 14 — ‘ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει’ - ‘en te anastasei’ - ‘in the resurrection; by the resurrection’. In general, both translations are possible, although the second one states that the resurrection ‘gives back’ something to people. The first option is more understandable, when after the resurrection there will be judgement and the Kingdom of God.

Luke XIV, 15 — ‘ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ’ - ‘en te basileia’ - ‘in the Kingdom’.
