it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.

(Colossians I, 1-2, 7-11)
Colossians I, 2 — ‘ἐν Κολοσσαῖς’ - ‘en Kolossais’ - ‘in Colossae’. ‘ἐν Χριστῷ’ - ‘en CHristo’ - ‘in Christ’. ‘ἀπὸ θεοῦ’ - ‘apo theou’ - ‘from God’. The preposition ‘apo’ emphasises that grace and peace are God's gift to people.

Colossians I, 7 — ‘ἀπὸ Ἐπαφρᾶ’ - ‘apo Epaphra’ - ‘from Epaphras’. The preposition ‘apo’ indicates a ‘handing over’ from Epaphras to others, his ministry.

Colossians I, 8 — ‘ἐν πνεύματι’ - ‘en pneumati’ - ‘in the Spirit’.

Colossians I, 9 — ‘ἀφ’ ἧς ἡμέρας' - aph hes hemeras - from the day. The preposition ‘apo’ in its form before the following ‘he’ indicates the beginning of the time. ‘ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ’ - ‘en pase sophia’ - ‘in all wisdom; with all wisdom’. Both translations are possible.

Colossians I, 10 — ‘εἰς πᾶσαν ἀρεσκείαν’ - ‘eis pasan areskeian’ - ‘in all pleasing’. Here, the preposition ‘eis’ emphasises the development in pleasing. ‘ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ’ - ‘en panti ergo’ - ‘in every deed’.

Colossians I, 11 — ‘ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει’ - ‘en pase dynamei’ - ‘in all power; with all strength’. Both translations are possible. ‘εἰς πᾶσαν ὑπομονὴν’ - ‘eis pasan hypomonen’ - ‘in all endurance; for all endurance’. Both translations are possible.

(Luke XIV, 25-35)
Luke XIV, 28 — ‘Τίς γὰρ ἐξ ὑμῶν’ - ‘Tis gar ex hymon’ - ‘For who among you’. The preposition ‘ek’ in its form before the following ‘hy’ indicates a choice among a group. ‘εἰς ἀπαρτισμόν’ - ‘eis apartismon’ - ‘in completion; for completion’.

Luke XIV, 31 — ‘εἰς πόλεμον’ - ‘eis polemon’ - ‘into war’. The preposition ‘eis’ here indicates entering into a state of war, being engaged in war. ‘ἐν δέκα’ - ‘en deka’ - ‘in ten; with ten’. The second translation is more accurate.

Luke XIV, 33 — ‘ἐξ ὑμῶν’ - ‘ex hymon’ - ‘of you’. The preposition ‘ek’ in its form before the following ‘hy’ indicates a choice among a group.

Luke XIV, 34 — ‘ἐν τίνι’ - ‘en tini’ - ‘in what; by what’. The second translation is preferable in terms of meaning.

Luke XIV, 35 — ‘εἰς γῆν’ - ‘eis gen’ - ‘into the ground; for the ground’. ‘εἰς κοπρίαν’ - ‘eis koprian’ - ‘into the manure; for the manure’. Here, both are possible, the first indicating the direction of discard, i.e. where to throw it, and the second indicating what it is for.
