(1 Corinthians X, 12-22)

1 Corinthians X, 14 — ‘ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρείας’ - ‘apo tes eidololatreias’ - ‘from idolatry; from idolatrous worship’. The preposition ‘apo’ emphasises every effort to avoid possible idolatry, the struggle against it, the absence of common ground.

1 Corinthians X, 17 — ‘ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου’ - ‘ek tou enos artou’ - ‘’of the one bread; from the one bread‘’. The preposition ‘ek’, which is omitted in many translations, actually has a deep meaning - it indicates the source of origin of Christian unity - the communion in the Body of Christ, in the Church. The Church as the Body of Christ is created through the Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ, and the Holy Sacraments are the source of Christian unity.

(Matthew XVI, 20-24)

Matthew XVI, 21 — ‘Ἀπὸ τότε’ - ‘apo tote’ - ‘since then; from that time’. This is a common expression. The preposition ‘apo’ may emphasise that the moment had passed, that Jesus expected and foreknew this confession as God, and therefore acted further. ‘εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα’ - ‘eis Ierosolyma’ - ‘to Jerusalem’. ‘ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων’ - ‘apo ton presbyteron’ - ‘from the presbyters (elders; priests)’. ‘ἡμέρᾳ’ - ‘emera’ - ‘on the day’.

Matthew XVI, 23 — ‘ὕπαγε ὀπίσω’ - ‘hypage opiso’ - ‘stand behind; depart behind; stand after; depart after’. Jesus tells Peter to ‘get out of the way, and don't get in the way’. This emphasises the complete and utter determination with which the Lord is going to Jerusalem to voluntarily suffer, die and rise again.

Matthew XVI, 24 — ‘ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν’ - ‘aparnesastho eauton’ - ‘let them deny themselves utterly’. The first word is derived from ‘apo’ and ‘arneomai’, where the prefix ‘ap’ emphasises renunciation, distance, abandonment.
