it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.
Matins:
Luke XXIV, 2 — τὸν λιθον ἀποκεκυλισμένον ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου
- ton lithon apokekylismenon apo tou mnemeiou
- the stone was rolled away from the tomb
. The preposition apo
indicates here that the stone was completely removed from the entrance, not in any way interfering with entry or exit.
Luke XXIV, 4 — ‘ἐν τῷ ἀπορεῖσθαι αὐτὰς’ - ‘en to aporeisthai autas’ - ‘in a state where they could not understand, could not figure it out’. When, in what state. 'ἐν ἐσθῆτι ἀστραπτούσῃ' - en estheti astraptouse
- in shiny (radiant) clothes
. In what.
Luke XXIV, 5 — ‘κλινουσῶν τὰ πρόσωπα εἰς τὴν γῆν’ - ‘klinouson ta prosopa eis ten gen’ - ‘lowered their faces to the ground’. The preposition eis
indicates the direction of the faces, the direction of the gaze.
Luke XXIV, 6 — ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ
- en te Galilaia
- in Galilee
. Where.
Luke XXIV, 7 — δεῖ παραδοθῆναι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων ἁμαρτωλῶν
- dei paradothenai eis kheiras anthropon amartolon
- it was needed to be handed over to sinful people
. The preposition ‘eis’ indicates where the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, was to be handed over. 'Needed' in the sense that God's intention for the salvation of mankind had to be fulfilled in this way.
Luke XXIV, 9 — ὑποστρέψασαι ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου
- hypostrepsasai apo tou mnemeiou
- having returned from the tomb
. The preposition apo
here indicates that they had completely left the place of burial, so that they had not seen it at all.
The verse Luke XXIV, 12 is missing from some manuscripts.
Liturgy:
Acts IX, 33 — ἐξ ἐτῶν ὀκτὼ
- ex eton okto
- ‘of about eight years'. The preposition ‘ek’ in its form before the following vowel indicates here the approximate duration of the paralysis.
Acts IX, 36 — Ἐν Ἰόππῃ
- En Ioppe
- in Joppa
. Where.
Acts IX, 37 — ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις
- en tais hemerais ekeinais
- then in those days
. A common expression. 'ἐν ὑπερῴῳ' - ‘en hyperoo’ - ‘in the upper room; in the upper chamber’. Where.
Acts IX, 38 — ἐν αὐτῇ
- en aute
- in it
. Where.
Acts IX, 39 — ‘εἰς τὸ ὑπερῷον’ - ‘eis to hyperoon’ - ‘into the upper room; into the upper chamber’. Where.

John V, 1 — εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
- eis Hierosolyma
- to Jerusalem
. Where to.
John V, 2 — ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις
- en tois Hierosolymois
- in Jerusalem
. Where.
John V, 3 — ‘ἐν ταύταις’ - ‘en tautais’ - ‘in them’. Where.
John V, 5 — τριάκοντα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη ἔχων ἐν τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ αὐτοῦ
- triakonta kai okto ete en te astheneia autou
- 'having thirty-eight years in his illness'. The detail here is significant - he did not have an illness, but 38 years in it, i.e. it indicates the richness of his patience, endurance, courage, and perhaps he also had gained
each year in his illness as an asset. It emphasises his long struggle with infirmity (if I am not mistaken, the longest recorded in the Gospels).
John V, 7 — ‘εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν’ - ‘eis ten kalymbethran’ - ‘into the pool’. Where. 'ἐν ᾧ δὲ ἔρχομαι' - en ho de erkhomai
- when I come
. When.
John V, 9 — ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ
- en ekeine te hemera
- on that day
. When.
John V, 13 — ἐν τῷ τόπῳ
- en to topo
- in the place (there)
. Where.
John V, 14 — ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ
- en to hiero
- in the temple
. Where.
