(2 Corinthians I, 8-11)

This reading is preceded by the one referred to here:

The continuation of today’s reading is the one referred to here:

2 Corinthians I, 8, 10, 11 – ‘ημων’ – ‘emon’ – ‘us’ (ours). ‘ημας’ - ‘emas’ – ‘us’ (we).

The apostle Paul testifies about the difficult and dangerous circumstances that he and his co-workers encountered in Asia, that they thought they would not survive, and that they relied entirely on God, their Saviour and Deliverer, and on the intercession of the faithful in prayer for them, and the Lord delivered them from those circumstances, so that they should all give thanks to God!

A lesson in hope and prayer, and then in thanksgiving (gratitude) after God’s help.

(Luke VII, 1-10)

Luke VII, 2 – ‘ημελλεν’ – ‘emellen’ – ‘was close to’ - from ‘μελλω’ – ‘mello’.

Luke VII, 5 – ‘ημων’ – ‘emon’ – ‘us’ (our). ‘ημιν’ – ‘emin’ - ‘us’.

Luke VII, 6, 8 – ‘ειμι’ – ‘eimi’ – (I) ‘am’. It is used for emphasis.

Luke VII, 7, 8 – ‘εμαυτον’ – ‘emauton’ – ‘me (myself)’.

The healing of a Roman centurion’s slave who showed great faith. Luke gives more details than the other synoptics, including the testimony of the Israelites who asked Jesus and praised the centurion. For a parallel passage in Matthew (Matthew VIII, 5-13), see this link:

Also compare a similar passage in John as an example of faith:

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the texts use the word παρακαλειτε (1 Thessalonians IV, 18, not read, but completes the words of the Apostle that are read today). These are multifaceted words that come from to call near and here mean comfort, from which we get the name of the Holy Spirit – the Comforter, the Paraclete.

Glory be to Thee, our God, glory be to Thee!
