it is written that the use of prepositions is important for the correct understanding of important and actual issues, in particular the issue of power, I am writing commentaries on the use of these prepositions. As a piece of advice on how to read the text, you can read the verse in translation and/or in the original (if you have the opportunity), and then the commentary on prepositions here. Next, you need to understand which part of the verse the commentary refers to, and consider what it affirms — or less often, denies — that is essential to understanding. This thoughtful reading helps to deepen understanding and protects against the mistakes mentioned above.

Of the Saturday before the Nativity of Christ:
(Galatians III, 8-12; Luke XIII, 18-29)
Galatians III, 8 — ‘ἐκ πίστεως δικαιοῖ τὰ ἔθνη’ - ‘ek pisteos dikaioi ta ethne’ - ‘out of faith He will justify the nations; out of faith He will justify the Gentiles’. Different translations are possible. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates what will be the cause and source of justification. ‘ἐν σοὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη’ - ‘en soi panta ta ethne’ - ‘in you all the nations; with you all the nations’. It is more likely the first option, since Abraham was not the Redeemer and Saviour, but Jesus Christ, the Descendant and at the same time the Root of Abraham, Whom he saw and was confirmed in faith.

Galatians III, 9, 11, 12 — ‘ἐκ πίστεως’ - ‘ek pisteos’ - ‘from faith; of faith’. The preposition ‘ek’ indicates the importance of faith.

Galatians III, 10 — ‘ἐξ ἔργων νόμου’ - ‘ex ergon nomou’ - ‘from the works of the law’. The preposition ‘ek’ in its form before the following vowel indicates what is essential in their faith and godliness. ‘ὑπὸ κατάραν’ - ‘hypo kataran’ - ‘under the curse’ (here rather in time, i.e. ‘still under the curse’, ‘still unredeemed’). The preposition ‘hypo’ is here with the accusative. ‘ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου’ - ‘en to biblio tou nomou’ - ‘in the book of the Law’.

Galatians III, 11 — ‘ἐν νόμῳ’ - ‘en nomo’ - ‘by the Law’. ‘παρὰ τῷ θεῷ’ - ‘para to theo’ - ‘in the vicinity of God’. The preposition ‘para’ here with the dative case indicates that the ‘works of the Law’ in the nearness of God do not save a person, i.e. the rites of the Law of Moses pale before God and do not save a person.

Galatians III, 12 — ‘ἐν αὐτοῖς’ - ‘en autois’ - ‘in it; with it’. Both translations are possible.

(Luke XVI, 10-15)
Luke XVI, 10 — ‘ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ’ - ‘en elakhisto’ - ‘in the least’. ‘ἐν πολλῷ’ - ‘en pollo’ - ‘in many’.

Luke XVI, 11 — ‘ἐν τῷ ἀδίκῳ μαμωνᾷ’ - ‘en to adiko mamona’ - ‘in unjust wealth; with unjust wealth’. Rather, the former is more likely.

Luke XVI, 12 — ‘ἐν τῷ ἀλλοτρίῳ’ - ‘en to allotrio’ - ‘in another's’.

Luke XVI, 15 — ‘ἐν ἀνθρώποις’ - ‘en anthropois’ - ‘among people’.
